Flavor: The overlooked factor

Undefeated has less flavor than your typical sports drink. Why? Our research shows that your sense of taste increases as your workout duration increases, and what tastes good at home does not taste great while working out or competing. Athletes, without realizing what they are doing, water down their drinks to compensate. Diluting your drink is a problem because it decreases the nutrition provided and affects the absorption of the nutrients and electrolytes into your bloodstream, which in turn, affects your performance. As a wrestler, every drop of concentrated nutrition is crucial, especially prior to weigh ins. Undefeated offers you the option to choose your flavor intensity without sacrificing nutrition or performance and uses 100% all natural flavors with no artificial sweeteners or colors.

Slide to the left for less flavor. Slide to the right for more flavor.

Helpful Hint: Cael's signature series is formulated at Low to Medium flavor intensity. That does not mean he is weak!

Carbohydrates: 3 is better than 1

Substantive studies show that multiple carbohydrate sources are more efficient than a singular carbohydrate in sports nutrition products. Undefeated utilizes a proprietary blend of three carbohydrates for explosive sustained energy and long lasting endurance while positively regulating insulin levels and not upsetting the digestive tract. Undefeated contains Dextrose, Sucrose and Maltodextrin; all 100% natural. Dextrose is a short chain; fast burning carbohydrate for quick, explosive energy. Sucrose is a moderately fast burning molecule and is broken down slightly slower than sucrose for optimal absorption, providing the energy needed to sustain initial battles. Maltodextrin is a slower burning, longer chain carbohydrate used to maintain endurance, prevent bloating, regulate insulin levels and stave off the crash that that athletes feel after drinking a singular, highly refined carbohydrate source.

Slide to the left for higher concentration of Sucrose (Matches, Weights)
Slide to the right for higher concentration of Maltodextrin (Long workouts, Tournaments)

Helpful Hint: Ultra Hydration is set in the middle with a perfect balance of the 3 while Tournament Endurance is set ¾ of the way to the right for a more complex, longer lasting energy source.

Calories: Some need more than others

The calorie slider allows you to adjust the number of calories per serving in your formulation. The rule of thumb is 2 calories per pound of lean body weight. Take your total weight, subtract body fat (Body Fat % x total weight) and then multiply by two.

Helpful Hint: 125 pounder. 6% body fat. 118 lbs. lean mass x 2 = 236 Calories per serving. This is just a rule of thumb, you are unique, pay attention to how you feel and adjust accordingly.

Electrolytes: Crucial for Hydration, Nerve and Muscle Function

Undefeated’s exclusive Electrolyte Blend is composed of Sodium chloride, Potassium chloride, Magnesium gluconate and Calcium gluconal. Electrolytes are an absolute necessity for hydration and performance. Loss of electrolytes causes a decrease in performance and can cause cramping, nausea, dizziness and other symptoms of dehydration. Replacing electrolytes is critical to athletes and especially wrestlers who work their bodies to the extreme.

Slide to the left for fewer electrolytes. Slide to the right for more.

Helpful Hint: Everyone loses electrolytes at different rates. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. If you are cramping, dizzy, dehydrated, you need more electrolytes to restore hydration.

Protein: Muscle – Power, Recovery

The word Protein in Greek translates "to take first place," a wrestlers ultimate goal. Scientifically speaking, proteins are large, complex molecules that make up 20% of our body weight in the form of muscle, bone, cartilage, skin and essential body fluids. Protein is made up of amino acids that are the building blocks of muscle, skin, hair, nails, eyes, hormones, enzymes, antibodies and nerve chemicals. Inadequate protein intake leads to a breakdown of healthy cells and without repair, can ultimately lead to fatigue, poor athletic performance, weak immunity, injury and slowed recovery time.

Scientists have been evaluating the effectiveness of protein and amino acid supplementation for improved muscle performance and enhanced muscle recovery in athletes. A recent study conducted at James Madison University by Saunders and colleagues discovered the addition of whey protein (1.8% concentration) to carbohydrate post workout reduced post-exercise creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels, a common indicator of muscular damage, by 83% (p < .05) as compared to athletes only consuming carbohydrate, which indicates whey protein has a potential ergogenic effect for endurance athletes engaged in intense training.

Undefeated takes advantage of a milk derived whey protein that contains all of the essential amino acids and has a 25% higher BCAA (branch chain amino acids) composition as compared to other protein sources. Because of its quick absorption rate, whey is also well tolerated by athletes.

Slide to the left for less to no protein. Slide to the right for more.
Undefeated will not let the ratio of protein get out of range for optimum performance.

Helpful Hint: Lactose intolerant? Let us know. We are working on a solution but for now, skip the protein.

Amino Acid Slider: Endurance, Recovery, Immunity.

Branch Chained Amino Acids (BCAAs) which include leucine, isoleucine, and valine, are essential for aerobic metabolism and may have performance enhancing qualities for endurance events lasting greater than 3 hours.

During endurance activity, BCAA levels decrease as they are taken up by skeletal muscle, which triggers the ratio of serum BCAA to tryptophan to skew in favor of tryptophan, an amino acid that increases serotonin formation, ultimately enhancing the perception of fatigue. Furthermore, a decline in BCAA may accelerate breakdown of muscle glycogen, thereby contributing to premature muscle fatigue, otherwise known as "hitting the wall".

Edward Blomstrand, PhD, of Research Laboratories in Stockholm, Sweden discovered that supplementation with three grams of BCAAs helped to maintain adequate BCAA levels, thereby muting the increase in serotonin levels and improving the usage of available fuel while protecting against protein breakdown in 7 highly trained endurance cyclists. Supplementation with 6-8 grams/day of BCAA and glutamine has been shown to decrease protein degradation during ultra-distance triathlon competition; decrease exercise induced muscle damage after prolonged running, and improved performance in 40K cycling time trial performance.

Furthermore, there seems to be an immuno-enhancing effect, helping to reduce the incidence of infection post-event. Endurance athletes should aim at consuming 6-8 grams of glutamine with a pre-exercise meal approximately 1-2 hours before a long training session (ie greater than 2 hours), and supplement with .5-.75 grams/hour during training in addition to a carbohydrate containing energy replacement drink. Furthermore, a dosing of glutamine immediately following long exhaustive exercise will help enhance muscle recovery.

Slide to the left for fewer Branched Chain Amino Acids. Slide to the right for more.

Helpful Hint: Cael’s signature series contains BCAA's in Tournament Endurance, Recovery and Weight Gainer formulas.

Caffeine Slider: Wait till you are 18. Energy, Endurance, Spares Glycogen.

Caffeine is a stimulant of the central nervous system, which also helps to release free fatty acids from body fat stores into the blood to provide fuel for muscles. There is substantive research that shows that caffeine spares the limited supply of muscle glycogen. It seems to be a performance enhancer, as many athletes after ingesting caffeine feel less fatigue while performing at higher levels of work. A wrestler should only use caffeine when needed for an extra boost. A known diruretic, caffeine should only be consumed when you are well hydrated. Caution should be used when using caffeine for long workouts, tournaments. Undefeated provides caffeine as a choice for wrestlers to give them a highly nutritious drink option while eliminating the temptation for energy drinks whose effects are short lived and provide little to poor nutrition.

Slide to the left for little to no caffeine. Slide to the right for more. All the way to the left, No Caffeine. All the way to the right, 100 mg of Caffeine (About 1 Energy Drink). Addition of caffeine with change the flavor profile of your Undefeated Custom Mix.

IF YOU ARE UNDER 18, Do not add Caffeine to your Custom Mix, unless you consult with your parents and exercise Physician or Certified athletic trainer.

Helpful Hint: Cael’s signature series formulas do not contain caffeine.

Osmolality 101:
Is more always better? NO!

Osmolality is a term used to describe the concentration of particles dissolved in a solution. It is a measure of density and is expressed in units of measurement known as osmoles or milliosmoles (one thousandth of an osmole), per 1000g of solvent, or mosm/kg. The more particles a rehydration beverage contains (such as carbohydrate, electrolytes, amino acids, anti-oxidants, protein or flavoring), the higher its osmolality.

Optimal absorption of fluids within the body happens when a sports drink solution is equal in terms of osmolality to what naturally occurs in the body. The osmolality of our body's own fluids are approx 300mosm/kg water and are regulated by the intrinsic mechanisms within our own system.

Fluids supplied with osmolality above 300mosm/kg, (i.e. hypertonic solutions), cause not only delays in gastric emptying but also more importantly will cause fluid shifts from the body to the gut before absorption occurs. Such delays in rehydration introduce the real potential to delay and reduce performance. (Alonso, 1998, Hargreaves, 1991, Sowka et al, 2000). Solutions that are isotonic, (having the same osmolality as our own body fluids), are without this effect. Solutions, which are marginally hypotonic, (that is are below the osmolality of the body), are known to be emptied quickly from the stomach and have the potential to be absorbed the most rapidly. (Leiper, 1998).

As the osmolality of your sports drink increases above 300 mosmol/kg, efficient uptake from the GI tract is decreased. In fact, solutions with high osmolalities (hypertonic) can actually draw fluid out of the body. For the everyday person, this is not a problem. However, for athletes who are turning over large volumes of fluids and electrolytes, it could literally mean life or death. (Or, perhaps at the least, finishing instead of a DNF).

Osmofit is a Patent Pending Process that automatically calculates the osmolality of your personal race drink guaranteeing that is will easily digest and give you the results you are looking for.

Slide to the left for less to Decrease the Osmolality. Slide to the right to increase the Osmolality. GREEN Number is preferred.

Helpful Hint: If the Osmolality number is GREEN, you are good to go. If it is YELLOW or RED, you are close but need to adjust the sliders for Flavor, Carbohydrate Blend, Calories, Electrolyte Blend and/or Protein down till the number is green. Electrolyte Blend and Calorie sliders have the greatest impact.

This makes your Undefeated get absorbed quickly without upsetting your stomach. Cael's Signature series is formulated with the Osmofit system ensuring proper osmolality.
